Emigration

Ankunft am 6.9.1923 in Ellis Island (New York) mit dem Schiff Tyrrhennia aus Hamburg. Die Passage wurde von Onkel Jakob Kessler bezahlt. 1923 gab es in Deutschland eine Hyperinflation bei der sich innerhalb weniger Tage die Preise verzehnfachten. Mit deutschem Geld war eine solche Überfahrt in dem Jahr nicht zu bezahlen.

Die Tyrrhenia wurde 1924 in Lancastria umbenannt. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges wurde die Lancastria am 17. Juni 1940 vor Saint-Nazaire von der deutschen Luftwaffe versenkt. Es kam zu vielen Todesopfern; die Angaben schwanken zwischen 3500 und 6500 Toten. Aufgrund der Fluchtsituation war zuvor die Zahl der an Bord strömenden Personen nicht festgestellt worden.
